When I first connect with a client, the focus is often on burnout and time… or the lack of it.
There are never enough hours in the day.
There is always too much to do.
But what if it isn’t just about time?
What if it is about energy?
Because there are things that drain you during the day that never show up on a calendar or task list.
- The five-minute conversation with an administrator (or an email from them) that lingers in your mind for hours.
- The student you are worried about.
- The committee meeting where nothing gets resolved.
- The pressure to stay patient when your own reserves are running low… especially at this time of year.
These won’t be found on any “to-do” list but they do “take” from you, your day-to-day life, and your energy reserves.
And by the end of the day, it is not always the workload, the students, or the meetings that leave you feeling exhausted. It is the accumulation of all the invisible moments that asked for your attention and care.
That is why simply “managing your time” rarely solves the problem.
So here is a question to ask yourself:
What are the invisible energy drains in your day?
Each day may look a little different, but when you begin noticing them, you bring awareness to what is actually happening beneath the surface of schedules and task lists. And from there, you can begin to find ways to handle them that lessen their impact on your everyday energy.
Did that question bring something up for you?
I would love to hear what you are noticing. Leave a comment below and share one or two things that tend to drain your energy most.
